
9:30 a.m. Sheriff Bob Norris “It is a sad day in Kootenai County. Very very sad day…It was a total ambush.”
At 1:32 p.m. a call was received to report a fire on the east side of Canfield Mountain. Around 2 p.m. fire crews reported the shooting. Around 7:45 p.m it was reported that a gunman was found deceased.
“During this time, we exchanged gun fire with the suspect.” Sheriff Norris said, “We received information from the white house and the FYI and Governor Brad Little that anything we needed they would absolutely respond. We had a lot of assets coming into the command post.”
- Two firemen are deceased: one Coeur d’Alene city firefighter, one Kootenai County fire and rescue fire fighter. Names are not being disclosed at this time.
- One firefighter has just come out of surgery. He is in stable condition but is fighting for his life.
- No other injuries have been reported in this incident.
- Bonner County, ISP, FBI, Spokane, Spokane county; 300 law enforcement officers were working on the incident and Kootenai County is grateful for the assistance.
- The body of the suspect had to be “scooped up” to avoid being in the fire line and has been taken to the Spokane County Coroner’s office.
“Based on preliminary investigation we believe that it is the only shooter.” Sheriff Norris goes on, “There is no threat to the community at this time based on the trajectory and the type of weapons that the individual had.”
Kootenai county Sheriff’s Department 7:43 p.m. “This evening, member of the SWAT team located a deceased male on Canfield Mountain. A firearm was found nearby. Additional Information will be posted during the scheduled press briefing at 9:30 p.m. At this time, the Shelter in Place is being lifted, however there is still an active wildfire on Canfield Mountain. Residents in the area are advised to be prepared and ready should further action need to be taken.”
4:58 p.m. – According to Fox News, FBI is on the way. – “We now have two deaths and an unknown number of casualties; we have civilians still coming down off the mountain.” – Bob Norris
UPDATE: At least two fire fighters dead. According to the press conference at 4:30 p.m. authorities are unsure how many shooters are involved. The Kootenai County Sheriff, Bob Norris is encouraging his men to “neutralize the threat.”
“We are actively taking sniper fire as we speak. We have multiple agencies on scene. We are prepared to neutralize this suspect who is currently actively shooting public safety personnel.”
We are receiving reports of an active shooter situation in Kootenai County on Canfield Mountain following a wildfire that had been started. Reports say that several fire fighters and police officers have been shot, and the wildfire is still burning. Reports are saying there are three shooters.
Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department is advising to stay clear of the area.
