Fill your feeders, it’s bird counting time!

“In 1988, a small group of us locals started the North Idaho Chapter of the National Audubon Society. The North Idaho chapter was both Bonners Ferry and Sandpoint …” Jan Rose says. “Many years there weren’t enough of us to do a conduct an official count, so Audubon would not accept our results, but we did it anyway, covering as much of the territory as we could, helping each other conduct both the Bonners Ferry and Sandpoint counts.”

There is still a group of bird counters who are deeply invested in the preservation and conservation of the birds of Bonners Ferry, and they will be performing the count on Tuesday, December 30, and they need your help!

If you live within 7.5 miles of downtown Bonners Ferry, fill your feeders now, and keep them filled. This will ensure the birds will get use to knowing where the food source will be.

We need people who have some experience with wild birds and can provide us with good data.
If people want to participate, we will need to know participants’ names, physical addresses, phone numbers and e-mail contacts.
Sorry, no webcam sightings are allowed. Only real people in real time observing real birds.
If you are interested in helping, or doing a feeder count, please contact bfbirdcount@gmail.com.

According to Audubon, “For 120 years and counting, the National Audubon Society has preserved bird habitats, conducted scientific research, influenced policymakers to enact commonsense conservation laws, and engaged communities across the hemisphere to protect the natural resources upon which birds—and we—depend. By “bending the bird curve,” we are working to halt, and ultimately reverse, the decline of birds across the Americas.”
