Don’t shoot my house, bruh

By Boundary County Sheriff Travis Stolley

We recently responded to a report of a bullet striking a home in our county. Unfortunately, this isn’t the only time this has happened. In each case, investigations have shown these incidents were caused by recreational shooters using inadequate backstops behind their targets.

Please remember: every bullet you fire will come to rest somewhere. It is your responsibility to ensure it stops safely and does not travel beyond your target.

Key safety reminders:

Always use a proper, substantial backstop that will completely stop bullets (a dirt berm, hill, or commercial bullet trap). Know what is behind your target and beyond it.

Follow the Four Fundamental Firearms Safety Rules:

  • Treat every weapon as if it is loaded.
  • Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.
  • Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
  • Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire.

Recreational shooting is a valued way of life here in Boundary County, but safety must come first — for you, your family, and your neighbors. Let’s all do our part to keep our community safe.
