Community pillar, Bruce Merrifield was taken to Boundary Community Hospital on February 6, 2026, with severe chest pain. The doctors discovered that this was caused by a severe aortic dissection and he was transferred via ground by the LifeFlight crew to Kootenai Health. Due to the severity of this condition, Bruce was airlifted to the University of Washington Medical Center where he had lifesaving surgery. He is not out of the woods, but according to the family, surgery went as well as could be expected.
Bruce and Deanea Merrifield have been faithful to this community for many years and have given of themselves, their time and their money to serve many people of Boundary County and it’s our turn to give back. They would never ask for a dime from anyone, so a GoFundMe account and bank account have been set up in their name.
As of February 12, 2026, we have an update from the family:
Bruce was sent in for surgery on February 11 at University of Washington Medical Center. He underwent a stent placement in his aortic arch to seal and strengthen the inner aortic walls to allow normal blood flow and correct a portion of the extensive dissection.
The doctor was optimistic with the surgery outcome. When they woke him out of sedation, he was successfully moving all limbs and was allowed to continue to sleep and rest throughout the night. Today, February 12, Bruce continues to show the miracles of God’s work. The intubation tube was removed after he showed great oxygen saturation allowing him to talk to us, nursing staff and doctors.
The doctors will continue to watch all vitals, ensuring controlled blood pressure and pain management. He will remain in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit. Thank you to all family, friends and community for the abundance of love and support. Continue to pray for Bruce’s recovery and healing. We are witnessing Gods miracles and are humbled by his presence here with us.
