According to the Idaho Transportation Department, on Friday, January 23, a hypodermic needle was found hidden beneath a handrail inside a restroom stall at the Lenore Rest Area, approximate 23 miles from Lewiston, Idaho.
Because it was concealed, it posed a serious risk of accidental needle-stick injury and potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Idaho State Police remains engaged as discarded needles and drug paraphernalia are increasingly found across the state, including rest areas and along the right of way.
Rest area caretakers have been notified and are paying extra attention to concealed areas. We are asking you to please stay aware of your surroundings when using rest areas and to be mindful of where hands are placed, especially around handrails and trash receptacles.
If a needle or suspected paraphernalia is found, do not touch it unless you have proper safety equipment.
Sharps containers are available in rest area supply closets, and ISP should be notified if you are not comfortable handling the item.
We are continuing mitigation efforts through increased awareness, vigilance, and exploring additional bloodborne pathogen safety training to support employee safety.
