Mountain lions making forays in area of Valley View

UPDATE: On February 23, tracks were seen in the area of Monroe and Boise Streets.

The Bonners Ferry Police Department has received reports of a mountain lion in the area Eisenhower Street, the Jenny Lane Apartments on Wilson Street and on Cody Street. These areas are highly populated and many of the area residents have domestic animals.

The sightings occurred at first light in the early morning hours prior to the sun coming up. It is imperative that those walking around in the area be vigilant and consider carrying bear spray, which has been shown to be effective against mountain lions.

BFPD has notified Fish and Game of the reports as well as the Boundary County School District 10 1, given the proximity of the schools. The mountain lion(s) have not been seen during daylight hours, but police want to ensure the safety of all the people in the general area in which the animal has been seen, including Valley View Elementary School.

According to the Idaho Fish and Game, some actions to take if you encounter a mountain lion:

  • Do not run
  • Do not turn your back on the mountain lion, crouch down, or try to hide
  • Remain facing the mountain lion and slowly back away. Leave the animal an escape route.
  • Try to appear as large as possible
  • Shout, wave your arms, and throw objects if the mountain lion does not back off.

Please remain vigilant while out in the early morning or late evening hours, which hold the highest likelihood of encountering a mountain lion. Police will update with future sightings to help keep the public informed of the whereabouts of the mountain lion(s).

Please contact the non-emergency dispatch number (208) 267-3151 if you see the mountain lion. If the mountain lion is actively harassing or attempting to harm you or someone else call 911.
