A dozen of Bonners Ferry’s outstanding junior girls will be given an opportunity to win scholarships in the annual Bonners Ferry Distinguished Young Women program at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 25, in the Becker Auditorium at Bonners Ferry High School, 6485 Tamarack Lane. This year’s theme is “Decades.”

Formerly known as Junior Miss, the Distinguished Young Women program recognizes and encourages excellence while promoting self-esteem among young women. Participants compete in five categories: Interview, Scholastics, Talent, Fitness, and Self-Expression. Scholarships are awarded to category winners, runners-up, and the participant named Bonners Ferry’s Distinguished Young Woman. Last year, the program awarded more than $13,000 in scholarships to local participants.

Participants also take part in the “Be Your Best Self” program, which focuses on five values: Be Involved, Be Studious, Be Healthy, Be Responsible, and Be Ambitious. As part of the program, the participants are mentoring thirteen local sixth-grade girls through the “Little Miss” program, and together they will be completing community service projects and educational activities.

The Bonners Ferry Distinguished Young Women program is funded entirely through donations and support from local businesses and community members. Those interested in donating may contact bonnersferry@distinguishedyw.org or mail contributions to DYW of Bonners Ferry, 1565 Oxford Rd., Bonners Ferry, ID 83805.

Tickets go on sale Monday, April 13, at Mountain Mike’s Health Food Store. Tickets are $15, with proceeds supporting the scholarship fund. Seats are reserved, and early purchase is encouraged.
