Shelman Realty joins forces with ERA Real Estate

June 6, 2022

Loralee and Mark Carey
ERA® Real Estate, a global franchising leader within the Realogy family of brands, today announced the affiliation of ERA Shelman Realty, 6737 Cody Street, Bonners Ferry. The firm has served the community since 1963. Co-owners Mark and Loralee Carey bought the firm in 2018 from Mark’s brother Steve Carey, who bought the brokerage from the original founder, Monk Shelman, in 1991. Their  son Isaac started his career in the family business and will eventually lead the company.

A native of Bonners Ferry, Mark Carey earned his real estate license in Oregon in 1984 and brought on Loralee Carey to be his assistant. The couple moved back to Bonners Ferry in 1993; Loralee Carey obtained her license in 2017, leading up to the purchase of the family brokerage. Mark and Loralee have also run a number of successful businesses over the last 40 years, including a housing restoration company. The firm is well-known and highly regarded for its expertise in 1031 tax exchanges.

“Our affiliation with ERA Real Estate will be a game changer for us as we add more agents to the firm and provide them with access to the brand’s comprehensive learning resources and professional development support," Mark said. "Our access to an expanded national and international network of like-minded real estate professionals will also provide a distinctive edge in the market. But more importantly, our enhanced value proposition as an ERA affiliate will allow us to make an even greater impact on our community and give back even more than we did as an independent firm.”

Shelman Realty is heavily involved in a variety of community efforts and donates thousands of dollars a year to organizations including the local orchestra, 4-H, Future Farmers of America, Alzheimer’s Association and the Bonners Ferry Senior Center, as well serving as the sponsor of the Kootenai River Run Scholarship.

ERA Real Estate was founded on the premise of building a franchise system based on the principle of collaboration- the idea that by working together and helping one another, a stronger community of real estate professionals could be built. Each ERA office helps strengthen the communities where they work and practice real estate.

In 1971, Jim Jackson founded the company, originally called Electronic Realty Associates, with the vision of utilizing the latest technology - then a fax machine - to provide the highest quality service. Since that time, ERA Real Estate has continued its innovator role. In 1973, ERA Real Estate offered the first nationwide home warranty program.

A few years later, the company introduced its ERA® Sellers Security® Plan, a unique program that offers qualified sellers a specific price and sales date. Today, ERA Real Estate continues to be a pioneer in the industry by capitalizing on the power of the Internet to offer unique offerings to both sales associates and consumers.

“Mark and Loralee’s years of experience with a highly diverse clientele and portfolio – from starter homes and move up buyers to high end and investment properties – have made them an invaluable asset to their community," said Sherry Chris, President and CEO of ERA® Real Estate. "As they enter the next phase of the company’s growth as an ERA affiliate, they have not only secured the firm’s future legacy for their son Isaac, they have also made a lasting investment in Bonners Ferry that will pay dividends for their clients for years to come. We look forward to supporting the firm’s bright future as part of the ERA family.”

According to the National Association of REALTORS®, the median home listing price in Bonners Ferry is $487,000.
