The Constitutional system of government that underlies our republic is of the utmost importance. That is why I am running to be re-elected to the United States Senate, representing Idaho principles and values.
I am a fourth generation Idahoan and hail from Bonneville Country. My wife Susan and I raised our five children in Idaho Falls, where I practiced law. Our children are all grown with families of their own, giving us fifteen grandchildren.
My political involvement began as an elected volunteer Republican at the local level. I served as an Idaho State Senator from 1984 to 1992, representing Bonneville County. I was then elected to represent Idaho’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, where I served from 1993 to 1998. In 1998, I was elected to serve as a U.S. Senator from Idaho, where I currently continue to serve.
My voting record has consistently been conservative, supporting efforts to promote freedom and liberty as intended by the Constitution and to reduce the size and scope of the federal government, including taxation, government mandates and overreach into state and local efforts. My conservative record is widely known and includes recognition from the following organizations:
• American Conservative Union: 91% Lifetime rating, Award for Conservative Excellence
• National Right-to-Life: 100%
• Gun Owners of America: A rating
• NRA: A+ rating
• Family Research Council: True Blue Award, 96%
• Citizens Against Government Waste: Taxpayer Hero, 90%
• NFIB (small business): Guardian of Small Business, 91% rating
My fiscally-conservative principles continually guide my efforts to rein in federal spending and address our nation’s fiscal health. The American Conservative Union has given me a lifetime rating of 91%, which puts me on the top ten conservative list for currently-serving U.S. Senators.
I have hammered against the Biden Administration and Congressional Democrats’ reckless tax-and-spending proposals and severe government overreach. The current level of our national debt is both unsustainable and unacceptable, which is why I have co-sponsored many bills that call for balancing the federal budget and controlling spending by moving to a biennial federal budget process.
We are all feeling the effects of this recklessness as inflation soars higher and higher.
I am a current sponsor or co-sponsor of several measures to help rein in our spending, including:
• A balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution requiring the President and Congress to enact annual balanced budgets and restrict federal spending to 18 percent of the Gross Domestic Product.
• The Zero Based Budget Act (S. 2463), which would cut wasteful spending and reduce U.S. debt by requiring government agencies to justify their spending levels every six years with a zero-based budget and propose a reduction in expenditures by two percent.
If re-elected and Republicans take control of the Senate, I would chair the Senate Finance Committee. Not only does the Committee oversee all federal revenue and tax policies, but it also has jurisdiction over health care entitlement programs (Medicare, Medicaid, CHIPS, Obamacare), which account for about two-thirds of the federal government spending.
Much of the spending on these programs is on ever-increasing autopilot. These together make them the most significant part of our national fiscal crisis. This will put me in the position to lead on reforming not only our tax code to make our economy more competitive, but also controlling our entitlement spending.
Further, we must secure our borders from the alarming, record-breaking influx of illegal immigrants. I will continue to press for a solid solution that will secure our nation’s borders, not provide incentives for further illegal immigration through rewarding illegal entry, and implement sound, sensible immigration policy based on the rule of law.
I continue to oppose and fight against severe government overreach like the Biden/Schumer/Pelosi “Build Back Better” bill, which is a striking example of the socialist agenda the Administration is aggressively pursuing. More spending, combined with job-killing tax hikes, will only accelerate the record-high inflation American families are experiencing every day.
I am a strong proponent of the Second Amendment. It is one of our foremost Constitutional rights. I do not support gun control, and we should not burden law-abiding Americans with additional gun restrictions that will not increase public safety. I am proud of the A+ rating I have repeatedly received from the National Rifle Association for my strong record of defending the Second Amendment.
Life is a precious gift from God, and I am committed to protecting the rights of the unborn. I have received a 100% rating from the National Right to Life Committee and an A+ from the Susan B. Anthony National Pro-Life Scorecard. Notably, I have also received a 0% rating from both Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America.
We need look no further than our nation's capital to be reminded of the importance of this fight.
The Biden/Schumer/Pelosi assault on American values and culture is dramatic and blatant. They are working aggressively to turn America into a classic socialist society and have until January 2023 to achieve that objective.
They are pulling out all the stops and perpetrating the biggest domestic and international threats to our freedoms in most of our lifetimes.
One year after President Biden took office, consumer price inflation accelerated to 7.5 percent in January -- the highest rate in nearly 40 years. Inflation continues to climb, and Americans are paying more for groceries, gas, and other household necessities.
This stealth tax was exacerbated by unnecessary deficit spending last year, and more reckless spending will only continue to fuel this inflation fire. Congress should be working to address the harmful effects of inflation and take steps to address our ballooning debt crisis.
Russia recognizes this Administration’s weakness, emboldening Putin’s attempt to seize Ukraine. While we should not put American troops on the ground in Ukraine, we must continue to provide lethal military support and impose harsher sanctions on Russia.
This Administration must stop waging war on American oil and gas production and instead restore domestic production. We should restore the Keystone XL pipeline and all measures that reassert America’s energy independence.
Furthermore, the Biden Administration’s failures internationally continue to spur the inflationary spiral. Biden’s reversal of the U.S sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline not only violated section 228 of CAATSA, one of the most powerful laws against Russia that have ever been signed into law, but also enabled Putin to weaponize energy production, using cash income to fund his military action against Ukraine.
As these last few weeks have unfolded, we have seen Putin’s atrocities and we must do everything possible with our allies to ensure NATO readiness and support Ukraine.
Yet, the experiences I have had -- seeing these radical far-left liberal tactics, observing how the actual public policies they seek result in deteriorating our culture and hurting our people -- have proven the wisdom of Idaho principles and values. I am eager to bring my enthusiasm and experience to winning this battle being waged for our freedom and our future.
I have a very strong record of accomplishment in terms of both stopping bad policies and implementing good ones.
I have had many opportunities to work to make the United States strong and competitive globally and domestically. Further, I would want it to be remembered that our policies protected and preserved Idaho’s incredible resources and beauty, while we strengthened the ability of people in a free market to build their own American dream.
