Iconic WW II bombers to visit Coeur d'Alene

July 10, 2022
B-25 Mitchell Maid in the Shade B-17 Flying Fortress Sentimental Journey

Two of the most iconic warplanes from World War II will land at the Coeur d'Alene Airport at 11 a.m. Monday, July 18, and be available for rides and ground tours through the week. The B-25 Maid in the Shade and B-17 Sentimental Journey, flown in from the Airbase Arizona Flying Museum, will also take part in the Coeur d'Alene Air Expo Saturday and Sunday, July 23-24.

Sentimental Journey, the B-17 Flying Fortress, is one of five still flying in the world. More than 12,000 were manufactured for combat during WW II and they flew in every theater of the war. Sentimental Journey was delivered for service in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1944 and flew missions in the Pacific Theater.

The B-25 Mitchell was one of the most successful and versatile aircraft used in the war, used for high and low level bombing, photo reconnaissance, strafing and submarine patrol. It was the aircraft used in the historic raid over Tokyo in 1942 by the Doolittle Raiders, launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet.

Maid in the Shade served with the 319th Bomb Group, 437th Squadron, at Serragia Airbase, Corsica, and she was flown on 15 combat missions over Italy and Yugoslavia between November 4 and December 31, 1944.

Ground tours are $15 per person or $30 for a family of four and will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 2 to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Tickets are available at the plane and no reservations are required.

Flights aboard Maid in the Shade are $375 for one of the four waist compartment seats or $590 for one of the three jump seats. Aboard Sentimental Journey, flights are $475 for one of the six waist compartment seats and $850 for one of the two bombardier/navigator seats.

Only 18 flights will be offered Friday through Sunday, July 22-24, and advance booking is required. Click here to book yours.
