The New Generation Singers to perform Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church

July 20, 2022

The New Generation Singers, a performing group from St. Joseph, Missouri, now on a two-week Rocky Mountain Tour, will be in Bonners Ferry for a free performance at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6784 Cody Street, at 7 p.m. Friday, July 22. The energetic faith-based choir, 50 strong, travels annually, sharing their message in song.

This year, their specific message is “Road to the Son,” which discusses our journey as people and Christians.

“We’re faith based ... but we have youth from most major denominations, and we choose to focus on the things that unite us instead of the things that divide us," said director Byron Myers. “Our program includes a wide variety of music – from upbeat contemporary songs to choral pieces and solos or duets. It contains something for everyone.”

NewG, as they are often called, have been in existence since 1970. Founded by Byron’s father during the rise of contemporary Christian music, they have continued now for 52 years.

“I often describe us as a youth group that sings more than a choir," Byron said. "Because our mission isn’t to just share music – but to share God’s love. Music is the vehicle, but not the end result”.

Singers range from youth to high school and sing year-round in Missouri. They raise the funds for their trip and pay the rest out of their pocket. Performances are free and intended to be fun. Through their participation, youth can grow in many ways including their talent, leadership skills and communication skills.

“It’s fun,” said Grace Feuerbacher, a singer and past president, “but in addition to being fun, you really learn a lot. I’ve grown not only in my faith, but I learned how to be an effective leader and how to work with adults and youth. I feel very fortunate to have had NewG as part of my life.”
