Don't be quick to judge

April 21, 2022

In his letter of April 20, Gerald Higgs states that I am “blatantly dishonest” in my mailer in which it was stated that the Boundary County Republican Central Committee supported me for State Senate. For a meeting on March 21, 2022, of the Legislative District 1 Republican Committee, the secretary’s minutes record that 25 precinct committeemen and one proxy of the joint Bonner and Boundary County Republican Central Committees met in Ponderay to endorse candidates for the LD1 legislative races. Four of the six precinct committee chairs from Boundary County were present at this LD1 meeting.

Legislative District committees are authorized by Idaho State Republican Party Rules to endorse legislative candidates in primary elections. I was not present for the deliberation at this particular meeting since I am a candidate, but the secretary recorded a vote of 25-1, by secret ballot, in favor of my endorsement. Since four of the six Boundary County Republican precinct committeemen were present, I interpreted the vote to mean that I enjoyed the support of both central committees, and so my mailer used the word “support.”

Subsequent to the mailing, I was made aware that the Boundary County Republican Central Committee does not prefer that their county committee be seen to have given an implied “endorsement,” and I have told the committee that I respect their position and their right to their committee’s name.

If we are in time to catch any printed documents before they ship in the future, I have told the Boundary County committee that I will not use their name but will instead refer to the Legislative District 1 Republican Committee’s support.

We should not be too quick to assume that people are “blatantly dishonest” without discovering the underlying facts from the party accused. I strive to present accurate information on everything my senate campaign publishes and am always willing to receive, and appreciate, correction.
