The Republican Party has been drifting toward radicalism for decades, picking up speed through the Obama years, which made possible the election of Donald J. Trump and the first presidency in history in which the lie held power over truth. Fortunately, his reign of ineptitude and sheer idiocy lasted but four long and terrible years. Mexico didn't pay for the wall. America remained cool as ever and only Trump and his cult thought anything about his tenure was great. Touting "Make America Great Again," he never defined what he meant. Con artists never do. Unfortunately, as shown yet again last week and this, there are those still convinced Donald J. is our lord and savior. He is not. The party of Lincoln, a president ridiculed in his own lifetime but ennobled by the passage of years, exhorted this nation as he embarked on his second term, just 41 days before his death at an assassin's hand, that; "With malice toward none with charity for all with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right let us strive on to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan ~ to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations." remains in thrall to a twice-impeached failure who fomented insurrection after his electoral defeat and who later insisted in a post on his social media site; “Do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.” Trump is out of presidential power, but his MAGA lackeys and sycophants; Kevin McCarthy, Jim Jordan, Paul Gosar, Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, James Comer, Marjorie Taylor Greene, et al, continue to to do obeisance before the throne of Trump, to submit to his will. Congressional Republicans who once had at least a modicum of intent to serve their constituents, all of them, are now cowed by the radical MAGA gang to serve only this new and ill-named breed of "true conservatives" lest they be deemed RINO. They fall in line to the bullies of their caucus, the abnegation of their principles less odious than the thought of losing position and power. This weekend, the nation breathed a collective sigh of partial relief after news broke that "negotiations" between the Democrat administration and Republican "negotiators" to raise the nation's debt ceiling seems to have resulted in a "compromise." Our representatives in both the U.S. House and Senate have to vote on whether this nation will honor its obligations, whether this nation will pay its bills, debts entered into based on the full faith and trust of an honest and great nation. Debts incurred not only to other nations, but promised to her own citizens, her veterans, her Gold Star families, her Medal of Honor recipients. There were no negotiations, only coercion by Republicans against timid Democrats who still think the "rules of decorum" matter, a timid media who still thinks that there are two sides that must be told to every story. In times like these, such assertions are destructive. They empower the liar, the usurper. They enable the zealots to be elected according to the rules they themselves impose, by only those they endow enfranchisement. They enable those thus falsely elected to serve only those who support them. We can't yet be sure if Social Security, veteran's benefits, Medicare and Medicaid will be paid in June. The arbiters of that trust, the legislative branch, the branch of our government that incurred the obligations based on the trust of our nation's impeccable credit have yet to vote two days hence. There are still extremist left-wing Democrats who realize they are being conned and may well refuse to go along, just as there are smug Republican con artists, such as Matt Gaetz, who said Tuesday that he and his conservative colleagues “don't feel like we should negotiate with our hostage.” Our hostage. The libs, the Democrats. The citizens he swore an oath to serve. No interest in preserving the good faith and credit of these United States. No inclination to face and solve honest problems of this nation. Only in owning the libs, to seeing Trump returned to power that the almighty one might exalt them and continue his reign of abject and malignant inadequacy. In normal times, negotiation requires honesty and good faith effort. In times such as these, people of honesty and faith must realize they are being played. You don't coddle a con; you don't give him equal time. You call him out, refute him. You cede decorum in favor of truth and honesty. Media must realize that an honest assessment is more important than equal voice. We must refuse to be manipulated, refuse to be played for fools by stalwart and obnoxious idiots. Recognize that there is little to no truth to the lies they proclaim, hence no obligation to tell their side of the story as if it were credible In the world that exists now, the sole obligation of an honest journalist is to expose the lies, to refute the explanations and assertions with honest data and irrefutable truth and so to protect those who might fall victim. You refuse to be held hostage. You laugh uproariously when such a contemptible public servant as Marjorie Taylor Greene bangs a gavel and calls for a decorum of which she is incapable. You recognize that the Republican Party of today has, by its actions, merited honest mistrust and abject disrespect. And you deliver it. |
