The USS Idaho, a Virginia-class nuclear powered attack submarine currently under construction, is on schedule to be christened in the summer of 2022 and commissioned into active US Navy service in 2023, and a committee of Idaho volunteers is working to plan for the warship’s christening and commissioning activities under guidelines set by the Secretary of the Navy.

As part of the committee’s activities, they will welcome a contingent of the submarine’s first assigned crew members to North Idaho to familiarize them with our state and establish a bond between Idaho’s citizens and the sailors who will take the USS Idaho to sea as a critical part of our nation’s military strategy.

Her plank owners, the first sailors and command staff assigned t the new ship, will arrive in Idaho on October 3 and spend several days enjoying some of the sights and activities Idaho has to offer.

On the agenda are tours of the Navy's Acoustic Research Detachment in Bayview, Schweitzer Mountain, one of Idaho's active mines, the Nez Perce National Historical Park and a lake cruise in Coeur d'Alene.

SSN 799 is scheduled to be christened with the traditional breaking of a bottle of champagne on her bow next summer, after which she will undergo sea trials to prove her seaworthiness and if all goes well, she'll be commissioned into the U.S. Fleet in the summer of 2023.

The USS IDAHO Commissioning Foundation is an Idaho non-profit corporation staffed by volunteers of all walks of life who support the ship and the men and women of the United States Navy. They welcome donations to help cover the costs of USS Idaho commissioning and to go toward support programs for the vessel's crew and their families.

Donations can be made online here or checks, payable to IDA fbo USSICF (Idaho Defense Alliance for the benefit of USS IDAHO Commissioning Foundation Inc.), can be mailed to Idaho Defense Alliance fbo USSICF c/o Pulliam Associates, 7235 W Emerald St Suite A, Boise ID 83704.

In addition, the USS Idaho Commissioning Committee is raffling former Idaho GovernorDirk Kempthorne's 2007 Harley Davidson FLSTN softail deluxe, with only 799 tickets, $100 each, being sold. The raffle drawing will be held November 11. For raffle rules and to reserve tickets, click here.

SSN799 will be the fifth USS Idaho to sail in support of her nation. The first USS Idaho to sail with the fleet was a steam sloop in service from 1866 to 1873. One of the fastest ships of her day, she sailed to the Far East, arriving at Nagasaki in May, 1868.

BB24 was a Mississipi Class battleship serving from 1908 to 1914, when she was sold to Greece, remaining in service as "Lemnos" until April, 1941, SP-545 was a motor boat serving harbor entrance and submarine net patrol duties in the Cape May and Philadelphia areas in 1917 and 1918, and BB42, "the Big Spud," was a New Mexico Class battleship in service from 1919 to 1946, receiving seven battle stars for her service in World War II.
