CdA Police seeking info on abandoned newborn

June 30, 2022

The Coeur d'Alene Police Department is trying to identify the mother of a baby who was left at the doorstep of a Rockwood Lodge Apartment, 2001 W Voltaire Lane, this morning. Authorities responded to the apartment at 6 a.m. and found a newborn wrapped in a towel and placed in a stroller outside.

The infant was transported to Kootenai Health to be evaluated and appears to be a full-term healthy baby born only hours earlier.

Anyone with information that could assist in identifying the baby's mother is asked to contact the Coeur d'Alene Police Department, (208) 769-2320, extension 2.

Parents in Idaho facing such a dire decision do have recourse; the Idaho Safe Haven Act was passed in 2001 to protect abandoned infants, providing a safe alternative for parents who might otherwise abandon their baby.

According to the Act, custodial parents may abandon their unwanted newborns not older than 30 days without fear of prosecution, their identity kept confidential. To learn more, click here.
