Former Bonners Ferry child care provider gets five to 15

July 11, 2022

By Mike Weland

Thomas Edward "Eddie" Dyott, 64, who provided in-home child care in Bonners Ferry for over 20 years despite a troubling past, has been sentenced to five to 15 years in prison for sexually molesting a seven year old child in his care in February, 2014.

Dyott was arrested on by Bonners Ferry Police on a felony warrant in August, 2021, and formally charged with lewd conduct of a minor under the age of 16 October 21, 2021.

He pled guilty to a reduced charge of assault with intent to commit a serious felony and appeared in court for sentencing July 6 before Judge Barbara Buchanan.

"Very serious case," the minutes of the hearing read. "Psychosexual report very troubling. The Court sees a man who appears to have been molesting children for many years. Victim in this case did not disclose for a long period. Continued to have children in home ... damage to the victim is horrific."

Saying Dyott's psychosexual evaluation showed the highest risk factors she had seen in her years on the bench, Buchanan said testimony from his own daughters, whom he molested at around the same age and gave up parental rights rather than face prosecution, was very troubling.

Despite little criminal record, Buchanan said the only appropriate sentence was imprisonment, and she handed down a sentence of five years, determinate, ten years indeterminate for a maximum of 15 years, with credit for two days served, $345.50 court costs, $100 for DNA analysis and ordered that he repay Boundary County for his psychosexual evaluation.
