Army vet takes pains to thank landowners for letting him hunt

A grateful Vietnam-era veteran extended his thanks today to two special property owners in somewhat circuitous fashion, circuitous because the Army veteran, Mike Hill, lives in Florida, and the property owners, Paul and Charlene Wells, live in Bonners Ferry. But the presentation went off without a hitch.

In a letter read on his behalf by Boundary County Veterans Service Officer Ron Self, Hill wrote, "Dear Mr. and Mrs. Wells, I can't thank you enough for allowing me to hunt turkeys on your property again this year. I came on active duty during the Vietnam era. At that time, we were told to wear our uniform off post because we would be spat upon and cursed by many of those we swore to protect. A lot has changed in the intervening years.

"Most folks are more appreciative now, or at least they keep their thoughts to themselves. However, only a few go the extra mile and open up their property for an old vet to hunt on. You are among that special group of patriots who will never forget or leave behind those of us who have had the honor to serve our great country."

As a token of his appreciation, Hill had the Wounded Warrior Project provide two challenge coins to present for their kindness.

"Since I am a little far away to make the presentation myself, I asked Miss Julie Washburn, senior vice commander of VFW Post 2453 (Sandpoint) to present these coins on behalf of the WWP."

Washburn conveyed the Wounded Warrior Project coins to Bonners Ferry VFW Post 3622 Commander Scott Cameron, who presented them to Charlene and Paul.

"Thanks for all you do for me and my brothers and sisters!" Hill's letter concluded.
