Staples resigns as mayor

September 26, 2023

On Friday, September 22, Dick Staples submitted his resignation as Mayor of Bonners Ferry, citing a potential conflict of interest that involves the appointment of his son as manager of Mirror Lake Golf Course at the end of the year when current golf pro Ralph Lotspeich's contract expires and he steps down. Staple's resignation took effect at 5 p.m. that day. City council president Rick Alonzo is acting mayor and set to be appointed Mayor at Tuesday's city council meeting.

Discussions on the management transition at the golf course were held as early as July, and a subcommittee was formed to look at new course management options, but minutes of those and subsequent have not been made available.

According to Alonzo, Staples stepped down after his son made application to become manager. Due to Idaho nepotism laws, his application couldn't be considered as long as his father remained mayor.

"We haven't held any interviews or considered any applications, we're still early in the process." Alonzo said. "Dick stepped down so his son's application could be considered. The things a father will do for their sons!"

"I would like to thank all of the staff at the City for their hard work and support," Staples wrote. "It has truly been a pleasure to learn from all of you and I will make it my duty to let our residents know how fortunate they are to have you looking out for our city."
