Douglas Leroy Shaffer

February 7, 2022

Douglas Leroy Shaffer, born April 4, 1950, in Paso Robles, California, danced into the arms of Jesus on January 16, 2023, at the age of 72, after a long battle against cancer. He passed away at his home in Bonners Ferry, surrounded by family.

Doug was an Air Force Veteran and active duty during the Vietnam war. He had many interests, and seemed to find something in common with everyone he met!

Doug was a gun enthusiast who won multiple medals at marksman competitions across the country. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation of all varieties. He was happiest out in nature, and spent many years working with youth, teaching survival skills. Doug was also a talented gardener and enjoyed baking delicious novelties for friends and family. There was nothing that this man couldn’t do, and do well!

As tough as he was, he also had a very tender heart, and no one could hold a newborn more gently, or patiently teach his grandchildren how to calculate measurements in the kitchen, shoot a rifle, or replace a clutch in their truck. And the love he felt for his wife, Jenny, was on full display for anyone in his presence. The world lost a beautiful soul on January 16.

Doug was predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Marion Shaffer, and his son Allen Shaffer.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jennifer Shaffer, daughters and their husbands Jessica and Caleb Gardner, Alexis and Jason Perkins and Sara and David Redding, grandchildren Anthony Fortner, Melanie Perkins, Zachary Gardner, Ethan Gardner, Alyssa Gardner, Sam Redding, Katrina Perkins, Tayler Redding, Zoe Redding, and Christopher Lee, and his brothers and their wive Russell and Patti Shaffer, Darryl and Pam Shaffer and Gordon and Mary Shaffer.

Services were held at Bridgeway Assembly of God in Bonners Ferry on February 7 followed by a graveside service at Grandview Cemetery.
