Meet Legion Post 55's new commander

My name is Scott Cameron. On November 1, I became the new commander of Post 55 of the American Legion here in Bonners Ferry. Like Manny Figueroa, I am a former Marine. I served from 1977 to 1987 as an infantryman. After my active-duty time, I began dual careers in law enforcement and healthcare. I joined the American Legion in 2005 and I am very proud and honored to represent Post 55 as its new commander.

I fell in love with the Panhandle in 1992 when I came here on a business trip and then came back in September of that year for a vacation.

My wife Cathy and I began house hunting back in 2016 and at the end of some adventures and misadventures, fell in love with Bonners Ferry. We bought our home here in 2018 with the idea of doing a slow roll into retirement in late 2024 or early 2025.

After a couple of serious medical issues in 2019 and March of 2020, the doctors told me I was done. So, after 38 years with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, I retired and we became fulltime residents of Bonners Ferry.

We haven’t looked back and have enjoyed every minute of our life here with our five greyhounds and all our neighbors in our new hometown.

So, if you’re a veteran and you’d like to hang out with your fellow Marines, soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardsmen or Coast guard sailors (no slight meant to my sisters in arms), we welcome you. If you went to jungle warfare school, mountain warfare school, amphibious warfare school, infantry combat school, cooking school or typing school, even if you went to BUDS or Raaaannnger school, you are welcome at the Legion!

We meet at the VFW Hall on the second Thursday of every month. Dinner is at 6 p.m. and the meeting follows. Good fellowship and bad jokes guaranteed!
