On Saturday, May 6, four members of the Kootenai Valley Rifle Club traveled to Spokane to participate in the 52nd annual George Conner Rifle Match. This match is held on the outdoor range at the Spokane Rifle Club. Using .22 smallbore single shot rifles, the course of fire is a Dewar Course, consisting of 20 shots prone at 100 yards and 20 shots prone at 50 yards. Then the shooters continue to shoot a position match at 50 meters, shooting 20 shots in the prone, standing and kneeling positions. Nineteen juniors, under 21 years old and using iron sights, and four seniors, over 20 years old and using scopes, took on the challenge. Lucky for the participants, the weather in Spokane did not match the weather at home and the day was overcast with little wind. No rain to speak of. Paige Sartell, shooting in the Sharpshooter class, improved her score by over 90 points from the previous year and moved up from Marksman. She took second place in the Dewar course and third place overall in her class. Salix Harris and Kyalynn Comer were both in the Expert class. Harris improved by over 30 points and moved up a class. She took second place in the Dewar course and second place Expert. Comer only shot in the prone class last year, so made quite the jump this year. Proving herself a good prone shooter, she placed thrd in the Dewar course and fourth in the Expert class. Kathy Konek, shooting in the senior class, was second in the Dewar course of fire. The outdoor season has just begun for these shooters. Other matches will be held in Spokane, Wenatchee and Missoula. If you are interested in learning more about, or returning to, the sport of competitive shooting, please leave a message for Don Jordan at (208) 610-0226. The indoor season will pick up again in October. See you on the range! |
