North Idaho Classical Academy officials are thrilled to announce that Major William Calkins is joining their team as the assistant principal. With 13 years’ dedicated service in the United States Marine Corps, Calkins brings a wealth of leadership experience and a commitment to excellence.
During his time in the Marines, he deployed to various countries, including a three-year stint in Okinawa, Japan, where he developed and executed crucial military operations to uphold peace and stability in the Asian Pacific region.
Prior to his military career, he pursued his passion for education, graduating from the University of Memphis with a bachelor’s degree in education. Alongside his wife Elizabeth, he is a proud parent to three wonderful children.

North Idaho Classical Academy is an open enrollment, tuition-free public charter school in Bonners Ferry. All Boundary County and northern Bonner County students are eligible to attend, with seats filled through a lottery system.
The school will open in August 2025 for students K-6 and one grade will be added each year through grade 12.
North Idaho Classical Academy’s mission is to train the minds and improve the hearts of students through a classical, content-rich curriculum that emphasizes virtuous living, traditional learning, and civic responsibility.
