After attending a STEM conference this summer, third grade teachers Kelsey Rice and Shelly Hoisington were determined to integrate more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities into their classrooms. To make this happen they needed supplies.
That is when they focused on looking for ways to fund a STEM cart that could be filled with games, activities and materials to promote hands-on learning activities. At the conference, a colleague mentioned the Classroom Wishlist as a possible funding source. Classroom Wishlist, sponsored by the Idaho State Lottery, awards up to $10,000 monthly to educators in Idaho public schools to help with classroom needs.
Shelly applied for a grant and Valley View third grade was awarded two STEM carts filled with various items to engage students and bring high quality learning into their classroom. On July 31, a representative from the Idaho State Lottery traveled to Bonners Ferry to deliver the supplies and award a very large $3,435 check representing the amount awarded.
Students and staff are excited to explore the opportunities these STEM items will provide. It will be an amazing year at Valley View with lots of exploring and learning!
