By Rich Stephens
This is not a letter that I thought that I would be writing anytime soon. It is a thank you but also a goodbye to the citizens of Boundary County, whom I have had the privilege to serve under the leadership of three different sheriffs over the last 21 years. Our world has changed so much during that time and our county has not been immune to the effects. One area where it does differ tremendously is the support that law enforcement has from the citizens of our county.
During the difficult time of the 2021 riots and protests, there was an anti-law enforcement sentiment in many cities across the country where people were calling for defunding of the police. At the height of this, I was incredibly touched when I came to work one morning to find blue ribbons tied around the trees and flag in front of the sheriff’s office in an amazing show of support for our local law enforcement.
During that same time, between Bonners and Sandpoint, I saw many blue ribbons wrapped around the utility poles along the highway. When it felt as though the world hated us, Boundary County made sure that we knew that was not the case here.
I understand that there has been a lot of questions as to why I am no longer with the sheriff’s office. The reason for my departure is simple. The incoming sheriff has chosen to not retain me.
During his campaign, he assured Sheriff David Kramer and I that, if elected, he intended to keep me in the position of undersheriff. Following his successful bid for the office of sheriff, he informed me that he decided that he was not going to keep me in that position but would move me to another role within the sheriff’s office. He said that he valued my knowledge and experience in operating the sheriff’s office.
And then, on December 31, he delivered a written notice of his intent to terminate me upon being sworn into office on January 13. That was one of the most unexpected and painful moments that I have experienced, one that I am now coming to grips with.
Now that the shock has passed, my family and I are preparing to move on to the next chapter in our lives. My hope is to find a place in our community where I can apply my experience and ability. I have experienced overwhelming support from total strangers, longtime friends, family and from local governmental leaders. I am hopeful that I will find something here because this is where we live and I want to be able to continue to work with and for my friends and neighbors. We really do live in an incredible place.
I am only sharing this so you understand why I am no longer with the Boundary County Sheriff’s Office.
Even when presented with a reduced rank and title, I was eager and excited to make the sheriff and sheriff’s office successful. I am a firm believer that one’s title does not necessarily define you. I do wish success for the men and women of the Boundary County Sheriff’s Office moving into the future.
You came when my husband passed. Your kindness was so much appreciated. I didn’t know your name. I remember your face. I wish you and your family the best. Your next area to serve in , will be blessed and you will be,too.
I have had the pleasure of working with Undersheriff Stephens and learned early on he always displayed an exemplary work ethic and the highest level of professionalism. His departure from the Sheriff’s office is a great loss to the citizens of Boundary County!
Rich,
I’ve always admired your level-headed leadership and integrity in office. A consummate professional and true public servant for the citizens of Boundary County. Those qualities will transfer well to whatever you may decide to do. Perhaps this comes as an opportunity in disguise.
Best of luck.
It seems the new sheriff has already made a poor decision. I remember when my mother passed away 10 years ago Rich was there and very supportive to me and my family. I have always believed the sheriffs department was in good hands when he was there. I wish you well in the future Rich, and hope you will remain in our community.
