Idaho has long been a beacon of conservative values, championing free enterprise and keeping government interference at bay. Yet, our Republican lawmakers who claim to support President Trump and his America First agenda are advancing regulatory legislation that contradicts everything he has and is fighting for. Senate Bill 1027 is a perfect example of state overreach disguised as protection, which undermines the principles of deregulation and free markets.
While President Trump is slashing red tape and freeing businesses from government overreach, Idaho lawmakers are moving in the opposite direction. His administration’s historic deregulation efforts over the past couple months have ensured financial institutions and businesses can operate however they see fit.
Yet, SB 1027 is trying to handcuff Idaho banks with unnecessary mandates, telling them how they must operate and who they must do business with.
This is not the conservative way.
This is the kind of regulatory overreach we expect from Washington, not our conservative elected leaders from the Gem State.
Under President Trump’s leadership, America is poised to see one of the greatest economic booms in modern history. His administration is committed to eliminating 10 regulations for every new one. By reducing government interference, businesses can flourish, and financial institutions can thrive.
Why are our Idaho legislators doing the opposite? Why are they adding more red tape?
Supporters of SB 1027 argue that it prevents banks from “debanking” organizations based on political beliefs. But let’s be clear: this bill is a government mandate on private businesses.
Instead of letting the free market decide for itself, this legislation forces financial institutions to do business in ways they may not choose. Conservatives should reject this kind of blatant overreach.
Idaho lawmakers supporting Trump’s America First agenda need to oppose SB 1027. Trump’s deregulation policies and financial reforms already make it easier for Idahoans to access credit and resources. There is no shortage of options and no need to tell a business what to do.
Idaho conservatives should demand better from their representatives. If we truly support President Trump’s fight against government interference, we cannot sit idly by while our own lawmakers actively work against him. It’s time to stop pretending to be pro-business while quietly expanding state control. Idaho needs fewer regulations, not more.
SB 1027 is a step in the wrong direction. This legislation has already passed the Idaho Senate, now is the time to tell the Idaho House to vote NO on SB 1027.
