Second Chance Animal Adoption and Thrift, a shelter and a thrift store working in tandem, have been helping lost dogs and cats get home and homeless cats and dogs find forever homes since 1998. A new board seated in September is turning up the heat now that spring is here to make it even easier to put pets and their people together.

Right now, you can vote to help win a share of $500,000 in grants through MyGivingCircle. And if you vote and donate to Second Chance, each dollar you give improves their chances of winning!

The thrift store and the animal shelter play in concert with each other. The thrift store is the primary source of income for the animal shelter and the animal shelter is the primary reason people donate to Second Chance thrift. Beginning Tuesday, April 8, both will be open longer, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Every dollar donated and proceeds from every donated item that sells goes directly into the care of the animals and a donation receptacle will be installed later this spring to allow people to drop items off at their convenience … around the clock. Until it’s in, keep bringing clean and gently items into the store or the sidewalk after hours.

Cash donations can be mailed to SCAA, PO Box 1925, Bonners Ferry, ID 83805.

In addition to cash and merchandise, cat and dog food, probiotics, cat towers and chew toys as well as cleaning supplies, sanitizers, cleaning wipes, soaps and more can always be put to good use. Learn more about donating here.

Volunteers are always welcome as well to walk the dogs, sit with the critters or foster them, help mow and maintain the grounds and more.

Missy, the new thrift store manager, has done an amazing job, but there’s always work to be done and she’s grateful for volunteers who want to make a difference. One of the volunteers who has made a huge contribution is Dr. Chuck, a retired veterinarian who gives of his time and skill to check up on each animal to make sure they’re happy and healthy … ready to be loved and give love.

And to help get your pet home should it wander off, mark your calendar for the Second Chance microchip clinic by donation, taking place from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Tractor Supply, 79 Homestead Loop, Bonners Ferry.

Second Chance helps keep our community’s stray pet population down, not just taking in and providing food and shelter, but going the extra mile to bring about happy reunions, exchanging information with a network of regional shelters to bring pets and their people together.
