Time to get bidding for BoCo Backpacks!

Welcome to the Boundary County Weekend Food Kit Program’s third annual online auction, on now until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, on Facebook.

For those of you not familiar with Boundary County Weekend Food Kit Program, widely known as BoCo Backpacks, they have been in existence since 2011 and serve as a supplemental weekend food program for school-aged children in our community. In the past yeare they’ve we averaged 140 children receiving food kits each week, but the need in our community is great.

Around 60-percent of BCSD101 children are enrolled in and qualify for the free and/or reduced Federal meal program. When these children are in school, they are being fed at least two nutritionally sound and filling meals each day. When they are not in school, over every three-day weekend, these children are living in food-insecure homes.

This program was born out of the need and desire to ensure these children have access to nutritional and filling food options when they are not in school. The cost of each kit per week, covering three meals per day for three days, is around $6.80 for the weekend. Program cost per year is roughly $35,000.

They partner with Second Harvest Food Bank in Spokane, where they purchase reduced cost meal kits and then augment with food items purchased in bulk from the Bonners Ferry Super1. Every dollar they raise goes directly toward purchasing food items; they have no overhead costs because all labor and transportation is provided by volunteers and storage of food items is provided by the school district.

They also know that the children enrolled in the program are in true need; counselors and teachers in our schools are on the front lines, know the children and the families, and identify and verify that children in this program are in true need of this service.

That being said, if you’re not bidding in BoCo Backpack Auction 2025, your are missing out!
