Naples man facing sixth DUI after Highland Flats crash

A 54-year-old Naples man is in jail charged with aggravated DUI, a felony, and driving without privileges after a head-on collision on Highland Flats road that seriously injured a Bonners Ferry teen on Monday.

According to court records, Jose Gonzalez Luna was driving a 2013 GMC pickup west when he collided with an eastbound 1987 GMC pickup. A breathalyzer test showed him with a .354 blood alcohol content, and he repeatedly admitted to drinking.

In a case pending adjudication, Luna was charged with felony DUI, excessive, March 1, 2025. He pled guilty to felony DUI in 2011 and 2009, and to misdemeanor DUI in 2006 and 2004.

He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

His victim, whose name has not been released, was transported to Harborview Medical Center, Seattle, for treatment of extensive injuries.

      1. It is necessary. If this individual was not here, the poor victim would not be suffering now. I bet the poor teen and his family feel the same. How many more Americans have to be victimized? If the Sheriff’s department does not know, that is another issue indicating incompetence.

        1. Ok. It’s not our practice to check into immigration status on everyone that’s arrested. I’m sure if the court/law enforcement deems it necessary at hearing/trial then it will be addressed. We’re just here reporting what happened and what the outcome was. Thanks, Michael!

          1. Katie, what if they don’t check these things? Look at the track record for prosecution of serious crimes. I guarantee you, no one has done an immigration background check on the defendant. I have seen it scores of time. Not your fault, but the DA needs to get on it.

          2. I don’t disagree. They system is broken is many ways and it breaks my heart. I have family in law enforcement, and my dad is an attorney. My husband has many family members on the other side of the law, and we have seen first-hand how broken it is. I’m no one’s judge and jury but I’m an advocate for the family and of him getting the help he needs, no matter what that may look like.

        2. I 100% agree! The residents of Boundary County have a right to know what we are up against with illegals driving around up here! Especially if they are drunk!

  1. This person is a sad excuse for mankind. What ever happened to the,”three strikes you’re out,”laws?
He has no conscience nor feelings for anyone but himself. This crash should never have taken place. He should have been locked up permanently years ago and now through his selfishness has changed the life of his newest victim ,her family and all those who care deeply about her.Throw the key away and string him up by his heels.

    1. Unbelievable. A man with six DUIs should never have been anywhere near a steering wheel, yet here we are — a 16-year-old girl fighting for her life because accountability was never enforced. This isn’t just his crime, it’s the system’s failure. Every official who looked the other way enabled this tragedy.
Her future has been violently altered forever, while he enjoyed chance after chance to repeat the same reckless choices. That is not justice. That is negligence stacked on negligence.
Enough is enough — repeat offenders like this shouldn’t get to gamble with innocent lives. She deserved safety. She deserved better than this.

  2. This poor excuse of a human should have been denied use of free oxygen years ago. Another testament to no teeth in the law therefore no real threat of punishment for the criminals so why change their behavior.
As for immigration status, to expect a True Investigative Journalist to suddenly appear in all of North Idaho and possibly the entire US is nothing more than a fantasy-there just aren’t any. They’re all only interested in fluff pieces and fostering their own opinions/agendas. The days of reporters giving you ALL the facts and never allowing their own opinions to taint an article is long over! And no real reporter would tell a reader of their paper, “Shame on you”, they’d save that statement for an Opinion Piece Column. Mr Perez, you need to lower your expectations with all Boundary and Bonner County newspapers, it’ll save you an ulcer.

  3. There is a wonderful little girl that is five years old now and she has to see her Dad go to prison. You are all correct, 💯 But she is the best thing to me. What is wrong? The mill where he works is nothe reason why this happened.. There is a lot more to this story than I am sure you all are concerned.

    1. Mr Ramirez, the only thing that would be sadder than this situation already is would be that the next time he decides to drive drunk ( and he’s proved he WILL drive drunk), is his little girl could very well be his next victim. I’m disgusted you would defend such behavior and even go so far as to place blame somewhere else. Did the boys at the mill sit on him, put a funnel in down his through and force feed him alcohol? Or are you playing a race card? I’d love to know your explanation and I think others would as well. My sister and her unborn child were killed by a guy just like him, so my wish would be the death penalty.
