The City of Moyie Springs proudly announces the retirement of Fire Chief Steve Economu, marking the close of a remarkable chapter in the city’s history of volunteer service and community spirit.
Chief Economu has been a cornerstone of the Moyie Springs Volunteer Fire Department since its founding in 1978, when he served as part of the original group that established the department. Over the decades, he has devoted himself to protecting and serving the people of Moyie — first as Assistant Fire Chief for many years, and more recently as Fire Chief, leading the department with dedication, skill, and compassion.
Throughout his years of service, Chief Economu has responded to thousands of fire and ambulance calls, giving countless hours — all as a volunteer — to ensure the safety and well-being of his neighbors. He has also spent innumerable evenings and weekends training firefighters, maintaining equipment, and keeping the fire hall ready to serve at a moment’s notice.

In addition to his work with the fire department, Chief Economu has served the City of Moyie Springs as a long-time City Council member and as Mayor in recent years.
“Steve’s lifelong commitment to the people of Moyie Springs is an inspiration to everyone who believes in the power of community,” said city officials. “His years of volunteer service show what it truly means to give back — not for recognition, but because you care deeply about the people around you.”
The City of Moyie Springs extends its deepest gratitude to Chief Steve Economu for over four decades of selfless, volunteer service and for setting an enduring example of leadership and compassion.
“Serving your community isn’t just about what you do — it’s about who you are. When each of us gives a little of our time and effort to help others, we build stronger, safer, and more connected communities.”
Chief Economu’s legacy reminds us all of the importance of volunteering — of stepping up, lending a hand, and making a difference where we live. The City thanks him for his extraordinary service and wishes him the very best in his well-earned retirement.
