This Sunday Boundary County youth sports will host a tournament of seven on seven one hand touch football, with fifth through eighth graders from as far away as Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, Sandpoint, Priest River and surrounding areas. Coach Karl Green has a passion for youth sports. He says it kept him out of trouble as a kid and now wants to do the same for the youth of his community
It is important to him that every child will get a chance to play, so there’s no fee to play in this league for Boundary County kids. Varsity and middle school football coaches have joined together along with coach Green to put this together.
They use plays from the varsity level to prepare the kids for competition in high school. There will be concessions from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and all proceeds will go to the eighth grade promotion dance.
The practices and games are all voluntary for the players and over 50 players came out this spring to compete. As most of them are playing other sports; they play and practice on Sundays.
“The seven on seven and five on five is a great way for the players to hone their skills in the off season to make them better players in the fall, Greene said. “We are using this time to teach the players the fundamentals and the playbook that they will be using in High School. Our goal is for these players to compete for State Championships when they are in High School. But the ultimate goal is to shape them into fine young men who will be the pillars of this community.”
As Coach Danny Swift says, “Building champions for life.”
