Marcia Louise (Sorensen) Evans, 81 years young, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2024. Marcia was a long-time resident of Tropic and Henrieville, Utah. She moved to Bonners Ferry in 2021 to live near one of her sons. Her memorial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 30 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Tropic, Utah.
Mom was born to Alva Lowell Sorensen and Thora Almeda Curtis on August 10, 1943, in Ogden, Utah. She was the oldest child and only daughter of Alva and Almeda. She had three brothers, Craig Sorensen (2013), Alva Sorensen (Joyce 2006), and Denny (Mani) Sorensen. She was raised in Manti, Utah. She graduated from Manti High School in 1961. She joined the Army (Women’s Army Corp) in November 1962 and served as a private first class until she was honorably discharged in June of 1964. She worked in finances and was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey. In 1964, she married Jonthan Diller Swanson and was later divorced. In 1982, she married Robert P. Evans Jr. and was married for 17 years.
Mom had five children
Cindy Swanson, Larry Swanson, Lonny Swanson, Lesley Swanson (Becky) and Misty (Maloney) Worthington (2021). She also had the opportunity to help raise two step daughters, Jacky (Jeremy) McAlister and Lisa (Mike) Dohm for several years.
After serving in the Army, Mom lived in many places including Nebraska, California (multiple times), Texas, Hawaii (twice), North Carolina, and Louisiana. Mom worked as a secretary most of her career, but had many jobs, including secretarial work at a newspaper, receptionist and at her mother’s cafe in Utah, which she said was her favorite job. After her divorce in 1999, she moved to Logan, Utah, for two years and then in 2001, she became an administrative Assistant at Bryce Canyon National Park until her retirement in 2008. This is the job I think mom enjoyed the most. She loved helping people at the park and showing off the Hoodoo of Bryce Canyon and the red rock of the area. She spent 20 years of her life in Tropic and Henrieville, Utah. This is the area she considers home. She has many friends and “adopted” grandchildren in this area.
Mom’s hobbies included crocheting, gardening, hiking, shopping, clothes, reading and grandchildren. Mom was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She loved serving those around her. One of the ways she served was by giving her crocheting away. She still had over 200 balls of thread in her home when we cleaned it out. She has given hundreds, if not thousands, of doilies and other crocheted items away over the years. She was very talented when it came to crocheting. Another hobby mom enjoyed was making seasonal wreaths for her door.
Mom is preceded in death by her parents, Alva and Almeda Sorensen, her brother Craig and her daughter Misty. Mom has five children, two step-daughters, 18 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
She will be missed by her many friends and family across the country.
